This year was undoubtedly one of the best years in gaming. Yes, many new trends possibly gonna ruin more and more games to come. Looking at you EA and your goddamn loot boxes. Anyways, some of these games may have not been released in 2017, but I played them during it. Without further ado:
10. Metroid: Samus Return
These past couples of years were great for Metroidvania fans. But what the fans were waiting for is a sequel from one of the games that invented the genre. Finally, we get a full-on remake of Metroid II, from the Gameboy. The game stands close to its predecessors, but simple issues such as repetitiveness, and other major ones such as the lack of innovation over previous games keeps it a step or two behind. Still, the game was a blast with excellent boss fights, level design, and combat.
8. Tekken 7
Tekken 7 remains a Tekken game; a top-notch fighting game that improved in terms of mechanics and technicality. The game feels and plays even more solid than before with a great roster of characters, new moves, and overall quality.
7. Nioh
6. Resident Evil 7
Since RE4 the series was dipping in terms of innovation. It started by ripping-off itself, then had an identity crisis. Finally, RE7 took a step back and looked back into what made the first games great. Although the game is similar to the old style of RE1 and 2, up to today's standards, and with great innovative new additions.
5. Rainbow Six: Siege
The game wasn't released this year, but the support it's still getting makes it fresher than ever. Rainbow Six features amazing, top-notch shooting mechanics, great level design, and awesome characters.
4. Assassin's Creed: Origins
It has been a long time since I played an Assassin's Creed game. After Brotherhood, the series started race downhill, with few highs, but mostly the quality, ideas, and mechanics were going lower and lower. Finally, after taking a year off, Ubisoft truly delivered my personal best game in the series.
3. Yakuza 0
My first Yakuza game was the third one. The game blew my mind. It was, and still a one of a kind game. Unforetinitly, most of the games in the series that came after didn't stand on par with it. Now I can safely say that Yakuza 0 stands toe-to-toe with Yakuza 3. The game is a prequel to the series that improves in almost every part that made the game so great.
2. Mario Oddessy
Mainline Mario games are yet to fail to surprise me on how well crafted, creative, and fun they are. In Oddessy, Nintendo didn't really surpass Galaxy, but to release yet another game of that caliber is amazing. Mario Oddessy is easily one of the best games this year, if not all time.
1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Recent Zelda games started to feel a bit stale. The formula still works, but it seems that the developers peeked their creativity within it. Oddly, the team looked back on the original game's mechanics and what made it so popular...and it worked. The developers adapted the open-world style of gameplay from the original, but you could also see routes of ideas from other games which they borrowed and improved. But the major attraction of the game is how it emphasized exploration, and captured one of the most essential parts of gaming.
