Hakeem's Top 5 of 2016

5-Overwatch

Blizzards team based class shooter has been a popular play for me this year, with new content still rolling out and quick and dirty gameplay for easy play-and-go. It's like Team Fortress but a world prettier and far more strategy based if the right team is on your side. It was a good friend to me over the course of this busy year.

4-Pixel Heroes: Byte and Magic
So cute, but so fucking punishing is this game that it nearly broke me. But it provides hours of fun with its quirky style that are loyal to a good rogue-like afficianado like myself. Always fun to pick it up then set it down aggressively after being totally decimated by it. I'm worried that if I exclude it from my list, it'll kick my ass some more.

3-World of Warcraft: Legion
Where it may come as a surprise that the MMO fits my theme of quick and dirty gameplay, the new expansion offers an accessibility never before seen in its predecessors. I can play twice a week for moderate amounts and be on top of my game just like everyone else. With scaling difficulty mythic dungeons and a ton of world quests to keep my WoW thirst good and quenched, Blizzards MMO is still a part of my life.

2-Battlefield 1
This game blew me away to an extent I did not think possible of an EA shooter, with some of the most intensely realistic firefights and jaw dropping graphics; this game has set the bar so high for all its fellow combatants that I genuinely don’t know how any other shooter hopes to keep up. With EA still rolling out new content pretty frequently, this one is unmissable.

1-Salt and Sanctuary
Of all the games that took up most of my dedication this year, Salt And Sanctuary was one of my most favorable game revisits this year. Taking on a new class, creed, and a world of achievement whoring, this Dark Souls clone gives me a hauntingly good time while making my blood boil simultaneously. Our relationship is a love-hate one. But it has been my best friend this year.

Honorable Mentions:

-Enter the Gungeon
If there’s one thing this year has solidified for me, it’s that my genre of game of choice is a nice, punishing dungeon crawler experience with permadeath and ever changing terrain. Enter the Gungeon by Devolver gave me just that.

-Rampage Knights

I’ve longed for a Rogue Legacy like experience ever since playing it. And Rampage Knights was the closest I’ve gotten to such an experience. A randomly generated dungeon crawling slugfest with multiple classes to choose from and a multiplayer capacity to boot, this one has given me a second wind in the alley of achievement whoring and was the first game I’ve 100%ed this year.
