King's Quest

Another out of the ordinary purchase for me. But a game that I think has a wider appeal than the last game I reviewed.

So, King's Quest is or the one that I'm reviewing here today as is clear from the picture is an episodic point and click adventure game that is strong in style and characterization and low in complexity and difficulty. It is also the latest version of the King's Quest series that was started by Sierra entertainment back in wee old 1980, so it does carry a bit of legacy.

Getting back to the game at hand though. Let me start off by saying that this is what I would consider to be the quintessential family friendly action adventure game that is currently out there. The humor and characters are all very silly and well written in that they're all very well realized and the world does have a very consistent theme to it. However, it is a very specific brand of humor, family friendly as I mentioned earlier so things like puns, some innuendo and silly jokes are the main things you'll find here.

Looking at the gameplay, it is a pretty straight forward point and click adventure with some light action adventure elements thrown in there to take advantage of the 3D world the developers created. However, it was all a little to easy for my taste and why I'd potentially even label this as a children's game since not only is it not all that challenging and the theme of the game are handled in a very kid friendly way.

In terms of it technical aspects the game is well realized. However, there were some issues like stuttering and wonky load times that just didn't make sense to me. I was playing this game on a gaming computer so I really shouldn't have any issues yet the game kept tripping over itself. To me this showed a bit of laziness on the developers side in not taking the time to ensure their product was really optimized to run well.

King's Quest was an enjoyable experience. It scratched that nostalgia itch I had for old Sierra action adventures. However, its nothing that remarkable to write home about. Its a standard but well realized action adventure game with good writing and voice acting. If that is the experience that you want then you'll find it here for sure, but if you want something more than I suggest you look for something a bit more mature. Additionally, something I did want to note is that after the first episode it really looked like the developers decided to cut corners on the adventures. They all became significantly shorter and less filled with character so that really bothered me about the game as well. But, despite all that I morally can't recommend the game, due to the fact that the developers released an epilogue chapter that simply wasn't given to people that bought the 'Season Pass' like did were given no support to either access the final chapter essentially locking us out of getting the complete experience that we had expected on purchase.
