Assassin's Creed Unity

This year can definitely be categorised as the year that I've spent catching up on franchises that I've let pass me by despite me actually being a fan. With regards to Assassin's Creed I'm up to Unity now and I'm only one game behind now, and thanks to the lack of a game in 2017 I might finally catch up with the series again.

Unless you are an idiot then you are aware that Assassin's Creed Unity is both published and developed by Ubisoft and its playable on the PS4, Xbox One and PC's that run windows.

Now, while I did like the main character Arno so much than other Assassin's (I feel he what Ezio should have been.), the overall narrative in Unity was utterly meaningless despite being  a fun to play through. Mentioning this in a spoiler free manner, the conflict that take places within Unity during revolutionary France is actually not that significant to either the Templars or the Assassin's in terms of their organisations as a whole. On top of that the meta narrative of the Assassin's and Templar conflict in modern times isn't even fucking addressed or progressed at all. The game even start off with the Assassin's randomly contacting you a Templar to help them with literally no incentive to do so and I'm supposed to be convinced that we just helped them for no reason. At this point, I'm not even an avid believer in the cause of the Assassin's so I just didn't do anything at the start and the game gave me no other option to progress. I'm just at the point now where I'm angry that the game hasn't ended yet with regards of the narrative, Unity should have been the third game in the AC franchise and not the fifth and I'm fucking pissed about it.

On the technical level the game is as expected beautiful and a real sight to behold, Paris feels like the crowded revolutionary city that its is supposed to be. However, that is only when the game is functioning well and that isn't an assured circumstance. Despite being years old the game still has tons of visual and audio glitches and that is a fucking unacceptable circumstance I feel.

Mechanically, the Assassin's Creed games have again mostly remained unchanged, yes the combat of the game and weapons are solid but there are only so many games that I can play with the same god damn mechanics with a meaningless narrative before I simply become bored with the game.

This is a game I sped through to be honest, I beat the campaign as quickly as I could because as a historian who is into gaming this game just massages my brain in all the right place. However, I'm bored of this franchise and this game didn't help. The narrative is literally meaningless in terms of stakes and actual impact on the world created by the franchise. Its still buggy as fuck and that is unacceptable given the fact that the game has been out for years. If you feel like you want to skip an Assassin's Creed game than pick this one as the one to ignore and I say this despite the fact that Arno is my third favorited assassin after Altair and Edward.
