This is a game I got out pure and utter nostalgia. When I was searching for a title image to actually put in the article I even accidentally typed 'Metal Nostalgia 3'. The fact that I also got this game during the last summer sale also makes it a fucking steal in my book.
The Metal Slug games were there for me as I grew up, this particular installment came out fifteen years ago back in the long forgotten year of 2000. Man, if that doesn't age me and make me feel old I don't know what will. The game was origionally developed and published by the people at SNK, but there has been some additional work by a few more studios to port the game over to all the other past and current generation consoles. The version I played for the review was released more recently in 2014 on PC's through Steam. The game has pretty much been released on every console since its originally came out and is pretty much playable on anything except for dedicated handheld gaming devices like the PS Vita or 3DS.
Replying games like these reminds me about how money grubbing has always been a part of the videogame industry. For some reason though we didn't mind it that much back then, I would not even want to recall how much money I made my Mom spend at places like Chuck E. Cheese or Bullwinkles. But replaying these games now on PC is like sweet sweet revenge, its like, oh look I died again and guess what? NO COIN FOR YOU GAME! I AM THE MASTER NOW! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!
Aside from a potential childhood power fantasy being fulfilled, this game still has something to offer despite being fifteen years old. Its definitely not going to come in the beauty or great sound design departments but the game play here is pretty solid. Side scrolling bullet hell games really fell out fashion within the industry so there aren't really any modern equivalents that can give the same thing making this game pretty unique despite its age. Its frantic, stressful and all around very visceral and satisfying and that still holds up pretty well today.
This might be me talking due my rose tinted nostalgia glasses, or the fact I got this game for next to nothing since I grabbed it when it was on sale. But, this game is fantastic and really doesn't have a modern competitor that has come out in the last decade and half that can actually compete with it. That essentially makes this game a must have if you are looking for a strong gaming experience that won't take that much time away from you regardless of whether of not your an old man like me who can't look at this game without being nostalgic.
