It feels like it has been a while since I posted a review, let alone a review that is not an RPG. This game reminds me of the good old times of double dragon on my gameboy advance and when I had to use a cable to connect to my brother's GBA and the cable was so short we were stuck next to each other throughout the campaign and we were so into it. Mother Russia bleeds is as brutal as that and even more with its amazing soundtrack reminiscent to the same style of music I experienced in Hotline Miami. If anyone knows me, they know how Hotline Miami changed my perspective about music altogether and it is life-changing so I am a sucker when synth tracks start playing and violence ensues in any form, especially pixellated forms.
If you haven't already known how Mother Russia Bleeds is played, it is basically a beat em up with a gimmick, where your player(s) are addicted to a drug known as Nekro and the only way for them to push forward is to take more of it. Enemies are beaten through melee weapons or ranged weapons and start shivering. Those that are shivering have a source of nekro where your players can drain them off downed enemies. Being under the influence of Nekro, you can either refill your health as a form of defense or speed up time for all players and have a higher damage output in a very short period of time as an offense.
Other than that, it is very straightforward with its gameplay. I did not primarily enjoy how the campaign has different endings and as far as I know, there are a lot of endings. Graphically and aesthetically, I thought it was perfect where both sound and colors complemented each other very well. I can somehow understand the replay value on Arena mode but not the campaign despite it being short. Mother Russia Bleeds does not have Online co op although I wish it had that. Still, it made me appreciate and look back at how enjoyable couch co op games were.
If there is one other downside to it other than having a short campaign, it was definitely the dialogue. I haven't mentioned a thing about the story, because initially the set up to it was simplistic and it reminded me of how fluid Hotline Miami was with its storytelling (Not that Hotline Miami was simple) but when the 5 minute dialogue went on and on, I just wanted to progress to the next level and kept on skipping dialogue instinctively. Other than that, the game was enjoyable. You can find Mother Russia Bleeds on Steam as well as PSN and I can guarantee you will have a great time playing it with someone rather than beating it alone. See you on my next review
