For all intents and purposes I think this game counts as my first game that is kind of Lovecraftian in nature and I have to says its not bad. I'm definitely more aware of what other games that are like this now might look and feel like and I'm definitely game for a little exploration. I'm here to review the game though, so lets get that done.
Sunless Sea is an indie game that was developed and published by FailBetter Games and it actually started as a kickstarter project. As I'm sure you can already tell that pretty much means that this game is a PC exclusive, although it is available on all platforms.
The best thing about this game is its atmosphere. It feels wrong to judge the writing, graphics and music separately as its all of them together that really brings this game to life. The game really does feel like an oppressively dark and dank world where everything is sadness and suffering and that is god damn amazing given the technical limitations this game has being an indie game. The random events, the crew you have with you, your own decisions all the random events are really funny, unique, scary and interesting all at once aside from the major surprises that happen in the game like the one pictures above. I essentially went from someone who knows absolutely nothing about Lovecraftian lore to someone that is an active fan of it.
The game play itself I wouldn't say is bad, its a fairly straight forward simple affair. The combat is easy to get into and conduct and there is a degree of skill to it that doesn't mean that the opponents are push overs though. The fuel and resource management is also straightforward and reasonable. However, the worst fucking part of this game is the economic system in place, it is so difficult to try and actually extract a profit that it brings your progress in the game to a snails crawl. That coupled with the really punishing occasional enemy means your going to have to restart the game a whole bunch of times which in turn means a whole bunch of time discovered the same places again and experiencing the same two path branching story in a particular location for like the 10th time so far that regardless of how in to the game you think you are, you'll start to find the whole experience boring.
Although the writing in the game is solid, the atmosphere that comes about from the tone, music and graphic more spot on that can be imagined the game just did not manage to hook me. This was mostly due to the punishing game play where it take a substantial amount of effort to simply make money in game where upgrading your ship and equipment is actually more of a hindrance to a boon to you which is pretty hilarious twist in my opinion. But seriously, the game play is shallow and despite the story being immense its so difficult to unlock it to the punishing economic system in the game it simply becomes tedious to play the game.
