Quantum Break

After Max Payne 1,2 and Alan Wake, I was a fan of Remedy studio’s games. Their games are not what I would call Top notch, but both were very well made games with fun gameplay and above average narrative.

Watching the trailers for Quantum Break, I thought the gameplay looked like an evolution from Max Payne’s gameplay; mostly built around the idea of manipulating time; slowing time, speeding time...etc. The shooting in Max Payne, as well as Alan Wake, was well done, for when it came out that is. Both had their own mechanics that complemented the shooting.

I really hate his face. He looks like a less Asian version of Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit's protagonist
Unfortunately, the shooting in QB is atrocious; most of your arsenal is utter shit and nothing really stands out. The abilities, thou start good, never develop or evolve to keep them interesting. Most of the upgrades are just more of the same rather than overhauling or evolving from the starting ability.

The shooting mechanic is cover based, but is nothing that would make it stand out from any other average cover shooters in the market, which is really odd coming from a studio like Remedy.

The level design is also lacking in creativity, when it comes to the shooting parts. You move your way through from cover to cover, with no change of paste, other than the most used idea in shooter game history, a goddamn fucking red-exploding-barrel.

The other part of the gameplay is platforming. The levels are amazingly well done, but only aesthetically. The only thing you will do, gameplay-wise, is navigate through the level jumping here and there, slowing or rewinding time to slid through before whatever object fall on you, or block your way...etc.

All of the above I could get through and endure, whether it’s repetitiveness, lack of creativity or just average gameplay. BUT by far the worst aspect of the game is the dreadful show that interrupts your progress, granted you can skip it, and all the crap in it is more extra fat to the meat of the story, but still it’s around 4 hours of content that the developers put as part of the experience. That just shaves off effort that could have been made to at least polish the game, or add more GAME content. I really hope this is the last time we see this idea of joining a TV show with a game. When I sit down to play a game, I WANNA PLAY A GAME and not stop every couple of hours to watch a 20 minute shit show.

In the end, despite having a long period of development, QB was almost a great experience, but unfortunately it’s hindered by the awful show and the lacking gameplay mechanics. Who would have guessed that even Littlefinger couldn't make the experience a better one.
