Mario Kart 8

Finally I get to plug my Wiiu again, and just when I was about to open my window and toss the damn dust magnet.

If you ever played any Mario Kart you already know the formula as it is still mostly the same, but refined; you race other players to the finish line while attacking them and evading their attacks, all while you navigate through jumps, drop, obstacles and boosters.

Whats new in MK8 formula is mostly refinement, including great level design, vehicle handling, items and the overall feel and overall balance.

The art in MK8, aesthetically speaking, is the same as older games in the series; mostly built around themes from other Nintendo games. But finally we get to see it in HD, and it really shines the work of the talented folks at Nintendo. The courses, backgrounds, vehicles and characters are filled with great amount details, details complemented with the draw distance and scaling.

Technically the game is top notch, it runs in a glories 60 fps and 1080p, the great art design, and smooth controls just complement it further.

Courses now have more variety, transitioning from the regular on road race, flight control, underwater and upside down anti-gravity. The anti-gravity is one of the new addition to the series, It offers more than just navigating through parts upside down. As you go through anti-gravity sections, the tires turn side ways to hover your vehicle, and at that time if you were to clash with another player you get a short speed boost.

During the race you don’t just collect items this time around, you will be collecting coins. What coins add is a new layer to the gameplay; the more you collect the faster your vehicle will become, get knocked out by another player's items or fall off a cliff, and you'll lose all your coins.

Most of the items feel refined, Green shells feel more precise, red shells are easier to evade and so on and so forth. Unfortunately the Blue shell is still there to ruin everyone's time. You can have all the skill in the world and beat everyone from the start to near the finish, then get hit with a fucking blue shell and BAM...you just finished fifth. BUT there is one new item that you can use to defend yourself, a blow-horn. If you use the blow-horn when the blue-shell is hovering over you it will break it. That is just one example of how they made more balances to the overall game. There are other notable new items like the boomerang, fire-flower and piranha plant, that gives the game more sense of freshness.

Game modes are as usual: Single player, multiplayer, battle and online play. By far the most disappointing part of the game is, the battle mode. It was pretty much slapped on, a fart in the wind, an Adam Sandler film after 2004, in short: It didn't add to the game and if it didn't exist it would have been better.

One more feature worth noting is: “Mario Kart Tv” which is the replay channel. It automatically saves the last 12 games you’ve played and you can edit and share them. Did I say share? Yes like I said, Nintendo is finally getting with the program offering the ability to share your replays either on the Miivers or even...Youtube.

In closing, if you’re looking for a party game, something for the whole family or friends with outstanding quality and beautiful art, MK8 is a definite shoo-in.
