Chivalry: Medieval Warfare

The sheer amount of multiplayer only games flooding Steam over the last few years is pretty scary in my opinion. Mostly since the vast majority of them only strive to be temporary distraction to grab as much money as possible from the market in Steam before just running off and dying in obscurity.

I got this game based on a recommendation from +Rakan Aksoy and I can't say that I hold his recommendations in the same light after I played this game. But, he really can't be responsible for the subpar work being done by Torn Banner Studios who published and developed the game. Now, while I don't recommend getting the game on any console, it is available on the PS3, Xbox 360 and the PC. I got it and played in on my PC through Steam.

The game itself is pretty simple given that it is a multiplayer focused experience. There is no meaningful narrative to talk about and the game's value is essentially entirely based on its mechanics. So, I'll kind of summarize everything else up before moving on to the mechanics.

This game is for all intents and purposes a mediocre experience. Nothing that revolutionary is being done here visually or musically or in the realm of sound design. I do understand that the game did start as a mod, but that doesn't mean it still has to look and sound like one. Especially when the game is retailing for twenty five dollars on Steam.

Mechanically the game does have a pretty solid concept. The player makes their character take aggressive and defensive actions with their weapons using movements of the mouse. In the training this felt quite nice and fluid using many pretty much of the classes in the game, although there were some instants where traditional videogame clunkiness did creep its head in to some of the moves. Unfortunately this concept doesn't scale up very well especially when you take into account that the game allows you to take and give damage to your own team as well as the enemy team. In the mass of an actual match there is very little actual time to have a long drawn out fight with anyone as it will only take a few seconds for either your teammates or their team mates to show up and turn it into a three verses one resulting in one of you getting cut to peices. The classes in the game also haven't changed since the game came out three years ago, its still the same classes with the same playstyles and that got boring for me only a few weeks after I started playing the game. I can't imagine what it must be like to be someone who has been playing the game for years.

This game used to be interesting when it came out a few years ago. But right now, its nothing that interesting. There aren't that many maps in the game, there aren't that many modes and the classes haven't changed since 2012. This game has gone the way that many multiplayer only games have gone on Steam, its grabbed a lot of money from tons of people who liked the concept but forgot that an interesting concept can only entertain you for so long as they all have pretty short amusement half lives. Additionally, a lot of people forget the social elements of these games how most of them are just rubbish without an actual group of friends to play with. The majority of the game's player base is now pretty much done and you mostly either have people who have mastered the game or people who have just started out making the matches and community significantly less useful than a 'please insert the most offensive metaphor you can think of for yourself here because I'm not going to put more effort into reviewing this game than the developers did in making it'.

This game is dead. But that isn't because there haven't been any new maps out since the game released or that there haven't been any new classes out since the game came out a few years ago. Its because like pretty much most of the multiplayer only focused team games on Steam this game shone brightly for a few weeks when its concept was new and novel but the majority of the community has died out. All you will find now are people who have mastered the game waiting to murder you and other people who just like you might have just bought the game to get slaughtered because they can't tell when they are a little to late to the party. Save your money and buy something current.
